News| Development / Programming / Update: July 2005 | | posted by Technician1 on the 8th 2005f July 2005 | I have just programmed the new news section. This will allow administrators
to add news on the progress of the development. I am pleased to say Stone Age
Online is now in version 2.1.3. Stone Age Online has almost 2,000 lines of code
but thousands more is expected. Lighting fires has now been made and soon a
different item system will be coded. You will not see any change but the code
will be more efficient. A small "chat" may be added on the "The
Game" page that shows around the last five messages from the main chat.
Over the next few months a lot of items will be added in and hopefully expect
fighting soon.

| Problems with the Map | | posted by Graham on the 17th 2005f July 2005 | | Ok, so at the moment each tile of the map is fetched without looping the script.
When I did this i found movement was messed up and moving north would actually make you move east etc...
So I fixed this error by making it so when you clicked move north it actually made you move east, which really moved you north.
I think this is because the map has actually been fetched 90 degrees clockwise more than it should of been.
I am aware of this problem and I am fixing it now. The map is now looped, instead of each tile being fetched individually. Thus I can make a larger "mini-map" display!
Important!
The game will remain online but expect problems!!

| New Map | | posted by Technician1 on the 25th 2005f July 2005 | | A new map has been made. In addition to that Karma has been renamed to Wolfguard and is a begginer and wild server.
Beginner - Lots of resources
Advanced - Not many resources
Friendly - Server with pvp disabled. GM interaction allowed.
Wild - Server with pvp enabled. GM interaction minimum.
For those who want a friendly server there will be one coming (hopefully) when the game is mostly finished.

| Map | | posted by Graham on the 20th 2005f August 2005 | | The map is currently being edited. The new features are not currently in yet for the new types of trees etc...
This will be fixed but may mean a reset. I hope it would actually mean just making a script to fix all the bugs in the map editor which make it untidy.

| Olaf the Hermit Trader | | posted by Graham on the 5th 2005f September 2005 | Olaf, our new resident trader is buying and selling wares. Using a system of money called "Copper and Silver" coins you can now buy things from Olaf for money. But wait, how do I get money? Olaf will also buy things from you, and in return you get this new currency. Some players are very rich already, so you better catch up if you want to live in more royalty than them.

| Human-built world map | | posted by Graham on the 1st 2005f January 2006 | | The world map is now made by humans ( a PNG image file ). A script of mine magically converts the human-made PNG image file into the map format in the database! That means we are going to get better maps! However, there are still a few bugs so there are no mines at the moment :(. We are working on them and making a new version of the map with more trees on it. /Graham | |

| December 2005/January 2006 - Programming Update | | posted by Graham on the 2nd 2006f January 2006 | Happy New Year
This is Stone Age Online's third year of development! The Stone Age Online world is now in Year 3!
Traders currently disabled due to loads of bugs - we are making a new trading script which will be easier to use, with Sell/Buy 1, 5, 10, x and all options.
We are also testing a new footprints feature - where you move to and from is stored in the database, this could eventually lead to a tracking skill and maybe a "personal map" of where you have explored.
We've also got well over 5,000 lines of code, much better than the 2,500 when I last checked! I've coded about 200kb of code. I've made a statistics page - login, click Home then Statistics - it'll show you how busy I've been!
I've also noticed the database is HUGE - 8mb! Probably because of the new 500x500 map - custom designed by Killa :), featuring Islands, Rivers, Huge mines, Seas, Beaches, Forests and loads more. Start exploring!
We're updating the game lots more now - probably because I'm playing Wurm Online and RuneScape less :D. I think I'm starting to code faster than David does graphics!
Last month (December) was certainly an interesting month, but I think January is going to be even more interesting. We've got tonnes of features to pack into the game!
We've also had a few developers join the team - we have a total of 7! We also have 2 admins moderating the game which brings a total of 9.
We are also going to start a new advertising campaign soon, to bring in players.
Have a Happy New Year and have fun playing Stone Age Online.

| Approaching 50 users | | posted by Graham on the 2nd 2006f January 2006 | We are now approaching 50 users (we need 2 more!). We would of had 150 if one of the old mods (now no longer a mod) found a bug in the old admin control panel, deleted a whole load of users, changed a load of passwords and wrecked everything, so we had to have a reset.
I won't tell you the whole story now, the old mod might not like me to.

We've been busy at work and are working on a new website. At the moment you can do about as much as you could do on the old login page.
We're going to make it much better with account management, guides, forums and lots more.
(I'm not setting any ETA's though, as they'll be inaccurate).
Traders have been disabled - I'm still working on the new trading script. It'll be ready by the end of the week (hopefully).

Hope you've all had a Great Christmas and Happy new year.
Updates:
You may have noticed that there is now a 'Play Now' button, which was a quick job in Paint Shop Pro.
A new map, done by Jonny, (Thanks Jonny) perhaps I could have a go at one too.
A New front page, with our new, exciting domain; 'www.stone-age-online.com'.
Coming soon:
Tons more items and more traders. Perhaps some stylish clothes for people to wear, to show how wealthy, or poor they are... we need to start making a community in stone age online. Graham and I are desperate to apply a fighting skill for you all, we're discussing it in what little time we have.
Keep getting those skills up and money making!
Happy gaming,
Many Regards,

| This won't apply to everyone | | posted by Graham on the 6th 2006f January 2006 | I'm sick of it. Three years I've spent along with David and a few other small contributions from others making this game. All to have people cheating, begging me to set their skill to 255 and make them a special item or begging me to be an admin or a bug tester so they can get the "cool armour" or kick people for no reasons. Also admins are kicking people and banning for no reason. THIS GAME WAS NOT MADE FOR PEOPLE TO ABUSE IT. I'VE SPENT THREE YEARS MAKING IT. IF YOU WANT TO MESS ABOUT WITH AN ADMIN CONTROL PANEL OR GET 2 MILLION SKILL OR CHEAT EVEN IF I'M STARING AT YOUR SCREEN GO AND MAKE YOUR OWN GAME. I DON'T CARE IF YOUR MY FRIEND OR MY WORST ENEMY. I DON'T WASTE MY TIME FOR PEOPLE TO ABUSE MY GAME.
End of Rant.
P.S if you annoy me again by doing stuff like that I might ban you or get rid of your admin status (if your an admin) even if your my best friend. I don't care if it's Jonny's server - it's my game. He just needed to copy my database to get a server (which I did for him!) - I have needed to code a whole game.
Also remember why I made people admins - to moderate the game NOT MESS THE WHOLE THING UP - YOUR RUINING THE GAME FOR HONEST, INNOCENT, NON-CHEATING PLAYERS!!!!
I'm not naming anyone now but I might if it happens again when I'm in a very bad mood.
Sorry if this offended anyone - I'm in a bad mood today. I'm ending on a positive note - Happy Birthday Rory.

| Just a quick warning to those of which this applies to... | | posted by R E D W O O D on the 10th 2006f January 2006 | Hi all,
Just to say:
Cheating, or infringing the rules in any way; e.g. banning innocent players, teleporting people to ridiculous places, cheating, and generally bringing corruption, unfairness and wickedness to the game is NOT ON. Leave it out, Ok? It's not called for. We have many different utilities in place that can easily tell us everything. We will ban the users that break the rules as soon as possible.
To the others:
Happy Gaming,
Kindest Regards,

| An addition to R E D W O O D's post | | posted by Graham on the 10th 2006f January 2006 | | We've made it EXTREMLY clear of the rules. We've put them all over the news, on the motd screen, on the Wolfguard motd and most of it is common sense. To have an admin breaking them who I trust is horrible. Teleporting people and banning them for no reason is NOT acceptable. We've unbanned the honest, innocent players and if this happens again the person who did it won't know what's coming. In fact, to make sure people know what the rules are I'll write some up. Please also read over R E D W O O D's post below. | |

| Trading Exploit | | posted by Graham on the 19th 2006f January 2006 | Thanks to Bahamut we now know of a trading bug. I think a few people may have found this and exploited it without telling anyone, however telling an admin/dev about a bug at the moment is difficult and soon we will have some bug submission forms on the main website. The game will be offline until about six o clock GMT tonight. It could be earlier however - it depends on how easy/hard the bug will be to fix. Sorry for any inconvenience but this is a serious exploit that needs to be fixed and cannot be used any longer.

| What, adverts? | | posted by Graham on the 29th 2006f January 2006 | Yes we have adverts. But we use Google Adsense. That makes us different from other advertisers. Here's how:
It has the colour scheme of the website so blends in.
It is text and not animated.
It doesn't bother you very much like popups, popunders and animated images.
They do not appear in the game so your playing experience won't be bothered.
Once Google has spidered and indexed our site the adverts will be relevant and not about something that is not relevant to the site.

Items now get grouped in your inventory, so if you have 3 logs instead of saying:
Log

It will now say
Log
Quantity: 3
A much better improvement.
This also happens on traders and makes pages load MUCH faster!

| We are search engine friendly! | | posted by Graham on the 14th 2006f March 2006 | Instead of:
index.php?page=account/login
we are now:
account_login.htm!
This is going to stop search engines thinking the site is only 1 page big and hopefully index the whole site and generate more traffic.
The old urls will still work because I'm using mod_rewrite to rewrite the new ones to the old ones!
So index.php?page=account/login and account_login.htm both work!
I'm still updating the internal links in the site.

| 250 users! | | posted by Graham on the 15th 2006f March 2006 | We now have 250 users on Wolfguard and Fangtower put together!
This is great since we only had 50 since three months ago.
It's not just the playerbase that has been growing, the game has been growing too!
We now have 10,002 lines of code - over 400 kilobytes of it (about 400,000 characters)!
We've spent a lot of bandwidth too - a few gigabytes since Janaury 2006.
10% of the users sign up and play the game - we've had about 2,500 unique visitors to the website!
I've sorted out a problem with URL rewriting so now Search Engines should index more pages/content making us move up the results :).

| Easter Special Event | | posted by Graham on the 13th 2006f April 2006 | Easter Eggs have mysteriously appeared all over the world. Nobody knows why or how. It could of been magic, they could have been made and placed there, they could have been delivered by an easter bunny, if such thing exists.
Many people have started to find and eat or keep the easter eggs. They may run out soon - so there is no time to loose. Log in and start looking for easter eggs!
This event runs until the end of April.

| Houses | | posted by Graham on the 18th 2006f April 2006 | Houses are in!
Graham's how to Make a Wattle and Daub Hut Guide:
You will need 20 pieces of grass, 20 twigs and 20 pieces of mud for each house. The tools needed are an Iron Small Shovel and a Small Wooden Hammer. It is also reccomended that there is water nearby!
First of all forage until you have 20 grass and 20 twigs (could take a while!).
Secondly you need to dig 20 pieces of dirt with your shovel. Then find some water, click the "Dirt" and then click "Wet the dirt in some water to make some mud". Do this 20 times.
Then click "Small Wooden Hammer" and click "Build Wattle and Daub Hut" where you want to build the house.
Follow the instructions and wait 5 minutes and you will have your house!
Then click on "Home" then "Manage my Houses" at the bottom. You can then unlock/lock your houses.
Soon you will be able to let other users apart from you access your house.
When your house is locked only you can enter it and your items will be safe in there. When your house is unlocked anybody can enter it and take the items.
Houses start off as unlocked so remember to lock them!

| Definition of Admin | | posted by Graham on the 25th 2006f April 2006 | This is for the benefit of admins who don't know what an admin is and what priviliges they get.
An admin is a person who moderates the game. This is keeping the game running smoothly, banning and kicking rule-breaking players and helping new users get started.
An admin does NOT get 1000 skill, special items or free items, money and skills. They have to earn all in-game things themselves and will NEVER get any special priviliges like that.

| General Update | | posted by Graham on the 10th 2006f June 2006 | We now have over 420 users! The source code is getting bigger - nearly 20,000 lines and 700,000 letters of code. Counting up all the images and music used in the game the whole thing totals up to over 60mb.
There will probably be no newsletter this month as there is nothing to report.
There are a couple of things we are working on at the moment:
A better terraforming system (thanks to Sappho for the ideas!).
Unpaving roads.
Building walls.
Building gates.
And forming villages.
Hopefully these will all be started and maybe finished by the end of the month.
I'm currently working on something called personal pages. Every user can create a page on the website about them.
Your page is found at www.stone-age-online.com/~yourusername
For instance, here is mine:
www.stone-age-online.com/~Graham
In your personal page you can put a title, some information about yourself, your character information/stats and you can also customise the overall style of the page using CSS.
That's all for now.

| Designing a New Map | | posted by Graham on the 18th 2006f June 2006 | At the moment we're designing a new map. The map is going to be eight times the size as the current one - it is going to be massive. There are 2,000 x 2,000 tiles in the map, making it a 2km by 2km map - 4 sq km!
This is to prepare for a new update which will introduce these features:
- Brand new terraforming system
The new system will allow you to uncover rocks, make your own rivers and streams.
- Support for living in deserts
Players will be able to live in a desert - there will be special trees in a desert, cacti for getting water, some new items for living in deserts and a brand new house for a desert.
- Roads
Roads will be able to be unpaved.
This should help most of the suggestions along that some users have been suggesting in the forum.

| The "Array" Bug | | posted by Graham on the 1st 2006f July 2006 | This is a massive bug. Sometimes your user will teleport to somewhere else and your name will be set to Array. All your items and other things like that will be different.
This is a problem with two causes and two fixes:
- Session expires too quickly, my game code gets confused and sets your username to Array. To be fixed I need to modify PHP's settings.
- Using the variable $user in my code confuses the session into thinking the username is another value and your username is changed to something else. To fix replace $user with something like $user_data.

| Some problems that need fixing | | posted by Graham on the 6th 2006f July 2006 | At the moment there are two large problems:
Teamwork
People becoming really high skills, last time we had some users nearly reaching 400.
There is no teamwork in the game. This game is focused on teamwork so encouraging it is crucial.
I have thought of a solution for this.
A user has a skill points, of say 200. A user can train any of his skills up, until they get to 200. When a user runs out of points, other skills are decreased to allow the skill being used to increase.
So a miner might have:
Woodcutting 30
Carpentry 30
Smithing 40
Mining 100
Then the miner does lots of mining for his town/clan/village etc...
Woodcutting 20
Carpentry 20
Smithing 30
Mining 130
This way users cannot become too high in one skill and users will have to team up and specialize in one or two skills.
Money
Traders run out of money very easily, and very fast if a lot of people are trading at once.
A solution would be to allow users to smith/make their own coins.
This could also allow special currencies like a currency for a clan or a currency for a certain village.
Both these ideas might prove interesting and I would like some comments on them, developer, admin or normal user, please comment by sending us an email - use the "Contact Us" link under the "Support" heading.
Thanks, Graham | |

Our two new moderators are trusted friends of mine and should not mess about.
They also know a lot of languages: English, Spanish and bits of some others, so should be able to deal with users that do not speak English.
Unfortunately they will be leaving England soon and going back to their own countries, but this means they can cover hours that the current moderation team can't.
The mods/admins and devs all wish Marco and Lucas a happy welcoming!

| Head Moderator Rotation | | posted by Graham on the 20th 2006f July 2006 | Instead of having a vote, we will just have a rota for head mod. Blade will be head moderator first, then Sword master, then Bahamut and finally Lucas, then back to Blade again. This also helps to remove bias.
When we have multiple servers, each head mod will be the head of a server.
For the users that do not know, the head mod will decide when a new moderator is needed, organise the voting and also decide when a mod should be reduced to ordinary user status because they are not doing a good enough job. These actions can only take place if a Technician/High Level Developer approves.
The head mod can also lock the server that lets nobody login, not even to the website, in case of a serious bug. The only person who can unlock the server is Graham or another programmer with access to the database.

| VILLAGES!!! | | posted by Graham on the 29th 2006f July 2006 | You can now make your own village, or join a village.
Villages have now been programmed!
You can be a member of one village only, so choose wisely!
You can only join a village by invite only, but if you ask the mayor nicely you will probably be invited!
If you press "Home" then "Village Control Panel" you can easily manage your village, leave your village, review invites and join a village.
If you are a mayor of a village you can claim a tile of land to be your village's land. This will have a cost of 1 silver.
Please could nobody create 1-tile villages or loads of tiles scattered randomly around the world or else your village may be deleted.
Also I'm still working on Smithing, Walls, Gates, A Second House and letting other users enter your houses!

Graham Oh yeah, I'm thinking that because there are only a couple of users who actively play the game, maybe we should all group together and make one big village?
Also a village needs three members before you can claim land!

| Some General Updates | | posted by Graham on the 29th 2006f July 2006 | More terraforming options are avaliable. Check on your Pickaxe, Shovel and Seeds. This makes the game almost totally terraformable. They are very difficult though.
You can now let other users go into your house - click "Home", "House CP" then "Edit access list".
You cannot see people inside a house, unless you are in the house yourself.
Since Stage 1 is finished. Everyone who has signed up before today has a special avatar!
Smithing will be finished in 3 or 4 weeks. Walls, gates and a second type of house are finished.
Look below for VILLAGES!

| Admin Behaviour | | posted by Graham on the 12th 2006f September 2006 | Today some admins have behaved like idiots. We've had admins kicking, teleporting and banning each other and even innocent users.
This, said by David, sums it all up: "I'm most certainly not impressed with the way people behave on this game... it's not a joke, we put a lot of time into it, and people just abuse it. People are behaving like 2 year olds, they just can't keep to a simple set of rules. It's pathetic."
As a result of the incident we've removed an admin of his priviliges and are going to reduce the priviliges of admins overall.
If you were kicked or even banned during the incident which happened today at about 1:20 - 2:10 GMT then please press "Contact Us" and you will receive an in-game gift as compensation.

| Bridge Building | | posted by Graham on the 22nd 2006f September 2006 | Bridge Building is now in! I've finally been able to get some coding in. It's been a busy week! You can build bridges on fresh water or sea water. (Sea water requires a higher building skill!). To build a bridge, click a Small Wooden Hammer then Build a Bridge. If you have 5 planks and you are on a water tile then a timer should pop up for 30 seconds and then you build the bridge.
I'm also working on something a little secret which will run parallel with the current version of Stone Age Online. When it's revealed both versions of the game will still be updated, so if you prefer one you can play on that one.
A start on Farming should be coming soon. I'm thinking of splitting Farming up into a couple of sub skills as well.
Please post any ideas for Farming on the wiki or email us by clicking "Contact Us" in the menu bar to the left.

So I decided to add Papyrus (Parchment coming when animals added). To add Papyrus I needed to add a new plant, which I have done. Then we needed some form of ink. You can get ink from natural sources and in the Stone Age Online world you can find ink on a new type of seed and nuts.
And then I needed a place to put ink into. Like a pot. (You cannot carry a liquid in your hands!). So we needed a pottery skill. Which involved a new clay tile. There are a few around the map, you will be able to terraform them soon.
You can fire clay pots in a fire, which is the new firing feature.
Finally something to write with. A feather.
Feathers, nuts and seeds can all be found when foraging.
NOTE: You cannot trade Papyrus yet.
I hope you all enjoy the new update. Please report any bugs you find.

| AJAX | | posted by Graham on the 8th 2006f October 2006 | | I've got AJAX working in Mozilla Firefox. I've tested it in MSIE but it just says "Unknown runtime error". People should use such a rusty lump of junk Microsoft call an Internet Browser anyway. On the map you can see people move without refreshing the map. This has ruined the water animation but I will hopefully fix this soon.

warlock1994106542 hi all plz ask me if you want to join fireblazerz
Graham I've disabled it for the moment, and I've tested it myself using 2 browsers.
Sappho Now we just need to have more than one person online at once to test it. ;P
Ancient Whoops. That should be "shouldn't use". Silly me.

| What's going to be happening over the next few weeks | | posted by Graham on the 28th 2006f October 2006 | | I'm back from holiday and just about ready to start on version 3 of the engine. The engine is going to be completely re-coded and will use more technology to make your playing experience better and loading times faster. We're going to be using a lot more JavaScript, AJAX and improving the way we use OOP. We are also going to use MVC and more URL-rewriting. The database is going to be optimised for greater speeds and we will use caching on certain pages to make the whole website and game load faster.
Hopefully the database size is going to go get smaller, it is getting very big.
There will be a test version of the new game avaliable at www.stone-age-online.com/test.

Graham The event will still be running for at least a week so people who were away on halloween have a chance to take part so there is still plenty of time to gather pumpkins.
Sappho If we can easily get over 1000 in under an hour, I see no reason why the prizes should be limited to 25 and 75. You just have to explore a bit. Also, I never saw anyone "promise" anything, and it's Graham's game, he can do as he likes. I'm sure you still have plenty enough time to gather more pumpkins.
poopsydoopsy Oooh.. mabe to the top ten?
poopsydoopsy Doing that qwould be cheating the people u made first promis to...
poopsydoopsy nononono.... I was working for 75 :(
Graham Also since some people have hundreds of pumpkins, we are working on getting a new reward for 1000 pumpkins!
Graham Well Sappho, it would have taken a second to delete them but I put some in my house and needed to pick them up, and without TakeX/DropX it would have took a while ;-).
Sappho I wouldn't worry about that, poopsy... When he did the Easter event last year, the eggs stayed on the ground right up until he released the new map, months later. He said he was going to delete them, but he never did. ;P
poopsydoopsy I recomend you get your 75 before graham realises haloween is over... Nice avvys ;)
manga mwahahahahahaha
manga boo
sunburnt they still had pumpkins! and gourds and squash... even if they called it grunt ohh urg or something to that effect :)
Sappho Kite, I don't think they had skirts and trousers either. This'll be fun, thanks Graham!
kite graham ... did they have haloween in stoneage times???? heh cya

| New Graphics and Test Server | | posted by Graham on the 4th 2006f November 2006 | First of all we have some new graphics by David (R E D W O O D), replacing the wall, gate and papyrus tiles. These are a very good improvement on the previous versions.
Now to the good bit. As some of you already know, I'm rewriting the Stone Age Online engine. There is a test version of the new engine up at www.stone-age-online.com/test.
You cannot do much in it so far. At the moment I'm working on the basic database, authentication and page classes, so you cannot do much.

Caius Great love the new graphics they r much better well done R E D W O O D and cool logo for SAO.3.O
Sappho Can't do much indeed... Logo looks good though, this is exciting!

| Stone Age Online Version 3: | | posted by R E D W O O D on the 10th 2006f November 2006 | | Good Day All. :D
As quite a few of you may already know, Stone Age Online version 3.0 is on it's way. ;) - We have some enourmous, exciting new changes in store for you all; however, don't get too excited, there's still a debate on whether we can do it:
o Shiny new interfaces, that you can move and hide the different boxes around to your gaming preferences. We also have a selection of skins to choose from.
o An Avatar editor - you'll be able to style your gaming avatar from a wide selection of hairstyles, Clothes and boots.
o 'Smooth Movement' etc... We're packing up those tiles altogether! - you'll be able to walk around smoothly, trees, vegetation and other objects will be placed randomly and it'll make the gameplay all that more interactive.
o Sounds. - We'll have all sorts of ambient sounds, depending on where abouts you are; birds singing in the trees, the cosy chatter of the marketplace, trickling of water, and much more!
That's all I can think of for the moment, other than lots more huge graphical updates.
Regards,
SAO Team. :) | |

jessieomer ok so it works a bit but not well.
jessieomer mine is not working....
Graham It is still browser based poopsydoopsy, www.stone-age-online.com/test
poopsydoopsy I hope this doesn't become a download program...
poopsydoopsy So we should cash our money in for items.... hmmmm.. any hints on what's going to be worth most? }=)
Graham o Yes, a house will be bigger than a plant.
o Plants can be positioned anywhere, like the trees. Hard to explain, I'll show a screenshot in a news post soon.
o Yes, check Sappho's suggestion page for how we are going to do the economy in 3.0.
o The skin R E D W O O D is making will be public.
o Water will eventually be an obstacle.
o Yes, with the new engine we will implement your wall idea.
o The whole village system is going to change.
o To do Woodcutting/Planting you will have to click on where the tree is you wish to cut down or where you wish to plant the new tree.
o You will not keep cash from claimed land as they monetary system will be different.
I hope this answers all your questions.
poopsydoopsy If we keep our cash do the people who claimed land get their silver back?
poopsydoopsy
o Will a house be bigger than a papyrus plant this time?
o So... How would farming work if plants aren't terrain?
o Will the items have varried pricing?
o Will the skin that REDWOOD (I think) used ever be available to the public?
o Will water present an obstacle now?
o With this new interface will it be posible to incorporate my wall idea?
o Will claiming land system have to change?
o If objects arent on specific tiles than won't woodcutting and planting trees be much harder?
Small comment: I used to play a game like yours, from scratch with a very hard working creator and a few good admins... The game, I think is great, way ahead of yours (they started earlier), but they never got rid of tiles... I am not so sure you can do that also =/
poopsydoopsy Woo!! So.... will money be harder to get then? Do we keep our money?
Graham o No, but there may be an "item transfer" page for a few weeks.
o No. The skill system is completely changing. This will also give a chance for the newer players to start fairly with the older players.
o Yes, the map will be destroyed.
o You will keep special avatars/rewards. Nice idea for the icon by your name, that will probably happen too.
Graham poopsy: only the terrain is classed as tiles eg (grass, dirt, rock). Anything that goes on top of it is an object (trees, plants) and can be positioned anywhere.
poopsydoopsy It's 7:30+ were I am.. .
poopsydoopsy Just realised... without tiles, how will say, terraforming work? =O
If you take my skills and money away again i'll hurt someone
poopsydoopsy Sudgestion for icons: like a halloween one with a number in it (1,2) and a reward stage one. (I wasn't here for a while, was there an easter event?)
poopsydoopsy
o Do we keep our items?
o Do we keep our skills?
o Will the map be completely destroyed (like say... Sapho's prized island)?
o Do we keep our special avatars? If not (preferably) can we have an icon by our names instead?
Bahamut OH NO!! I'VE GOT DIAL UP AND HAVE NO PUMPKINS, ARRRGH!!!!
OH BY THE WAY, WILL THE SOUNDS BE ABLE TO BE TURNED OFF FOR DIAL UP USERS LIKE ME?! PLEASE
R E D W O O D Bah, sorry about the huge block of text there. I forgot to add the html. >_<
Sorry!

| 3.0 Status Update | | posted by Graham on the 11th 2006f November 2006 | You can now switch styles on 3.0. Here is a picture of a test style (I actually think it is quite nice, so it may be kept!):

The "Icy Mountains" interface by David is coming on very well and while he is designing the interface, he is also working on re-designing much of the terrain tiles, trees, item icons and skill icons.

If you have any suggestions for the Cobra2 (Stone Age Online 3) engine please post them in the wiki, there is a special suggestions page set up, as soon as possible because work on the core game engine begins very soon. Over the next few days you will see changes like this in the test engine:
- Map
- Compass
- More widgets
- More in-game help
- Items
- Skills
And over the next few weeks the admins will get a brand new shiny Admin CP with the item/skill/tile action designers which will allow the game to develop quickly.
We are also planning to get a new jukebox in and make the game more playable for the unfortunate users still on dialup.
As David said in his news post we are working on environmental sounds which will allow you to hear the cosy chatter of the marketplace, rustling of the wind, trickling of water, waves of the sea, sandstorms of the desert, rain, footsteps of other players, tweeting and hooting of birds, sounds of other animals and all sorts of other sounds which will really improve your gameplay experience. As we've kind of mentioned in other news posts we are trying to move away from tile-based as much as possible, so trees can be clumped together like this:

You will be able to fully design your character, choosing clothing, eye color, hair color and height.
We are also planning day/night cycles so you could play in moonlit darkness or bright day.
There are so many features we can pack into the game engine and since the developers can edit most items through the Admin CP without programming it will mean I can focus on all these shiny addons, especially weather and natural disasters!
Remember, you can test the new version of the engine at any time by clicking "Switch to TEST SERVER" in the left menu!
Please post any bugs/suggestions on the interface or email them to us. Remember to tell us your browser and OS and their versions (eg IE6 Windows XP Pro SP2). Please also post your CPU speed and amount of RAM, because some of the effects we use in the new engine might not work as well on older computers (eg 2.3GHz 768MB RAM). Thanks!

poopsydoopsy Hehehe Play. No I think we all apreciate the time you put in... Mabe next year when I take AP comp. sci. I will be capable of assisting.
Graham I cannot do lots of work at the moment as I've just formatted by hard disk and installed Windows Vista, so all the software I use for programming needs to be installed. I'm also very busy at the moment because I am in a play and have rehearsals so there is little spare time to fit programming in.
Graham it is not dead poopsy, we are working hard on the new version - it is very complicated as there are lots of things we want to pack in the new version.
poopsydoopsy wow this game is dead...
grahams_gay grahams gay
poopsydoopsy Wait... The map isn't being wiped?!! WHO EDITED MY WIKI POST?!! }=/
poopsydoopsy Ohhh.. gotcha... New ETA?
Graham Bug Testers do not get access to the new widgets at this time.
The new widgets are still in their early stages yet too.
And what is wrong with the snapshot being like that? It is the way David draws his graphics - he gives me an example of how to use them/lay them out on the page instead of loads of images and I don't know where to put them.
poopsydoopsy Soo... That snapshot was... A fake?!! No seriously... can I be a bug tester for like while you're making it? (if that snapshot was real it should be possible =/)
Graham Sorry but I'm busier than I anticipated. The new system is very complicated too, with all the features we wish to pack in. Tip: never trust ETAs.
poopsydoopsy I WANNA TESTIT... :,(
poopsydoopsy Every day I log on hoping that mabe the new widgets are posted :( Oh happy Bday Graham. :thumbs up:
poopsydoopsy If I was a bug tester would I be able to see the new version before time?
poopsydoopsy Umm.. were are my new widgets?
=/ =( }=/ }=(
poopsydoopsy Yay!! Wednsday!!
poOpsydoOpsy Dang... shoulda bought that extra one then }=)
Graham Dark Robes will not be given out again.
poopsydoopsy Yea I guess it wuld be better to fresh startenate. If we don't we'de just have to later.
poopsydoopsy Special Items are... What should I stock up on? All I have is... Any others? Of and do people who join in the future get a dark robe? (hopses not :()
o Pumpkin
o Mysterious Dark Robe
o Golden Spyglass
poopsydoopsy Soo... My 4,700 gold ore... ='( Gahhhhhhh Nooo... I'm fine. At least Sappho is hurt.... Wait... Since 'tons of pumpkins' is a prize, thus a special item do we keep them? }=)
Sappho Sorry about that, I was referring to Kindi. Everything is working well for me, I'm just having trouble reading the text because it's so faded. Thanks!
Graham By new skin, do you mean Icy Mountains or Kindi? I can make changes to whichever you cannot see. Special items will be kept, but all others deleted. We'll have "Smooth Movement", which means you move pixel by pixel at a fast (of course!) speed.
Caius, what browser are you using, you mentioned that you sometimes use your Nintendo to connect or something like that? Some older/smaller browser won't manage it, but the popular ones will.
The Icy Mountain skin is still being converted from the image David has created to actual HTML/CSS, so it's still a big Work in Progress.
A gold coin's value compared to copper coins will vary Poopsy, like converting from one currency in the real world to another.
There is only meant to be two public widgets at this time, more will be added, but at the moment we are still working very much on core work, don't expect to see anything extremely playable for a few weeks.
Sappho One comment, the new skin is absolutely beautiful, I love it, but the text is too faded for me to read it easily.
Sappho I would suggest not having us keep our items. And I have a lot of items that would be useful to keep, but it seems to me that if you're going to have a fresh start, which isn't a bad idea, it wouldn't be fair if we keep all of our old stuff, it would severely unbalance things. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to have us keep our avatars and maybe a bonus item like the cloak, but if we kept everything it wouldn't really be starting fresh at all.
Sappho WOW. This looks really fantastic, I can't wait for more progress to be made. Thanks you guys for all the work you are putting into this.
POOPSYDOOPSY Hmmm... If people are objects and not tiles... how will the compas work?
Caius it wont work on mine when i try to move the widjet thing it just highlights the text
poopsydoopsy The tabs on iceymountain sometimes have no background making them hard to see.
poopsydoopsy Hmm... you should make the skin backgrounds fit screen... mine is "tiling"(usage?).
poopsydoopsy Is the icey mountain skin always laggy or just the first time?
poopsydoopsy I cannot wait any loner =,( Muust... try... new... widgets....
poopsydoopsy According to saphs system there will be gold coilns.. will it be like b4 were a gold is 1mil coppers?
poopsydoopsy So roads will be objects and not terrein? how bout mountains?
poopsydoopsy No no it works (for us both I think) but I don't know if you can call having 2 widgets working...
Graham Road creation will be hard, but with a little GD it could be easier.
I'm still wondering if you will keep your items or not.
The remove widget option is going to be changed to a close button and will be much smaller.
Graham Poopsydoopsy, at the moment only help and logout widgets are avaliable to the public users. We're working on getting other widgets in so keep on checking it out.
Icemsn and Poopsydoospy, If you are reporting a bug please give more information. If you say it doesn't work we cannot do much. Does it let you login? Does it let you add tabs? Does it let you choose skins? Can you even start the test server?
icemsn How do i get the test server to work?
poopsydoopsy Those roads on the image look like it would be hard to code rode creation...
poopsydoopsy Wow... 4 votes at TWG a week... Will tokens ever be worth anything?
poopsydoopsy We get to keep our items right?
poopsydoopsy I noticed that the trees in the image are seperate and not stacked... On a separate note I just bought 4,700 gold ore.
poopsydoopsy Oh did I mention that I cant use shiney V3? =
'(
poopsydoopsy Lesse... for further reference I have access to in several locations 3 pentium IVs and a III. Lesse... ~330, 512, 512, and 512 RAM.
poopsydoopsy Sudgestion: an option to hide the [remove widget] option
poopsydoopsy Looks like the whole wiki will be obslete though.
poopsydoopsy One thing... Digging will be hard to incorporate if you plan to keep it... Will be hard for the graphics to keep up too..
poopsydoopsy 'm cryig and peing myself at the same time.... Not realy but it's still cool.
poopsydoopsy Also.... I recomend that you make the old stage 1 avvys stage 2 and replace stage 1 with something if you have time in the future.... Mabe a tree? I wana look like a tree :(
poopsydoopsy Umm... I still can't add the new widgets only help and logout.
poopsydoopsy **** you you ****... Almost wet my pants when I saw it.... THERE IS A GOD!!!
Graham There is also useful info in the comments of news posts!
Graham Please remember to read the posts below this one if you are looking for more features of the 3.0 engine!
|
| Test server now v3.1 | | posted by Graham on the 18th 2006f December 2006 | | So why 3.1? We took most of the base code from 3.0 and completely rewrote it, especially the interface code.
We have made some changes, including removing draggable windows which were a complete pain to setup.
So far I have set up some movement around a 3x3 tile map (with no collision, so you can walk off the edge!). It uses AJAX, so you will never see the page refresh. It still sends requests to the server, but in an "invisible" way. Without having to load the inventory, header and footer each time you move, the whole thing runs much faster and should consume less of the server's resources.
There will be lots of updates over the next few days to v3.1, because I am on holiday now so have plenty of free time. There will be a Christmas event, but on the test server only because the item triggers should be ready by Christmas, which will allow us to develop a really cool event in a short amount of time.

Sappho I added a small suggestion to the Cobra2 wishlist. Looking forward to more updates!
Graham Hopefully there will be more updates soon, but over the last few days I have been busy visiting relatives...
Graham What browser are you using at what version? How much RAM do you have and how fast is your processor? It should work fine on any new browser and I don't think it should run extremely slowly or crash easily, unless you have a problem with your browser.
poopsydoopsy Ahh... Bout time =D.... So... I've tried i once... what's the difference? =/ (Game crased very soon after comp slow bad }=/)

Graham The site has not been scrapped.
poopsydoopsy Seriously... Has the site been scrapped? I come to home page everyday and no new posts. You should shut down the game until 3.1 is out as you are perminantly reppeling new subscrivers like Oprah Browser did.
poopsydoopsy Soooo.... Is anyone ever on anymore? The wiki has been spammed uncontrollably for days }=/
LordKaos Hi HugaBuga
poopsydoopsy IE 7, Broadband DSL
Graham The web server went crazy earlier due to a configuration problem but appears to be fine now.
Graham It might also be slow because of your Internet connection - are you on dialup?
Graham The items do have real values, but they are not displayed yet. Avatars are not displayed because we are still working on the ways to customize them and movement is going to be tiled. What browser and what version are you using to play the game?
Sappho The problems you are noticing are not bugs - the new server just isn't done yet. You are not supposed to have an avatar, or more items, and yes, the map is only 3x3 for now. Patience, grasshopper!
poopsydoopsy Are the statistics for the items, such as weight going to be acutal values or just light/heavy etc? Then strength will have to be added and other stats right? Otherwise it would be like food and ores that have no use but still exist.
poopsydoopsy Ahh... I get the 3x3 part now... But I still cannot see my avatar and sadly I'm assuming that there will be no "nontiled" movement.
poopsydoopsy
poopsydoopsy BUG: The test server is not working at all for me. I can see nine tiles out of 25. And it is slow. Very slow. And also my inventory apears to be empty save an axe. And I do not know where I am. Pentium IV512M RAMSiS661FXWindows XPThat may help.
poopsydoopsy Hmm... I open this page every day.
So... With the whoe move one pixel at a time and skill wipe thing ever be implimented? I wish I could be of assistance, but I am not far in Comp Sci yet.
Graham Your inventory is now displayed through AJAX.
Graham The game now dynamically generates descriptions for items.
Graham Items should be pretty much finished soon, apart from scripting them :).
Graham The scripting engine for tiles/items will also be integrated soon, which means that once I finish a few other things off (like trading posts and currency) the game will expand very quickly.
Graham I'm starting on items at the moment. Killa is also designing a map for the new version which will get integrated soon.
Sappho I'm on the verge of an expectation overload!!

- Writing scripts for the scripting engine
- A new map for the new game
I'm going to be spending loads more time working on SAO, so expect heaps more updates soon.

Graham I've locked the spammed pages and blocked the spammers.
poopsydoopsy =D Maybe just lock the wiki then...
|
| Fixed 0xc1f30001 | | posted by Graham on the 11th 2007f March 2007 | In the new version of game, when using Firefox sometimes you may get an error that has the code "0xc1f30001" in it. This means that the game has tried to connect to the server to get a new page before the last one has finished loading and would stop both requests, meaning when moving the map or loading the items it might fail if the server is running slowly.
After a bit of research, I've fixed the error and I am uploading the fixed version. I lost one of the newer versions of the scripting engine (with all the commands in 1 file isntead of about 30), so I'm going to rewrite a bit of the scripting engine code and then I'll start testing it inside the game (tests so far have been outside the game).
In other news, the MSN Robot crashed the server yesterday! Microsoft say it should slow down when the server it is indexing is running slowly - but it does not happen! I've added some rules into the robots.txt file to slow it down and disallowed it to the slower generated pages.
More updates soon.

| Item Scripting in 3.1 | | posted by Graham on the 12th 2007f March 2007 | I have nearly finished item scripting in the new version of the game. Tile scripts/global scripts will be ready soon (on Tuesday, most likely) and then I can start putting SQL, map, user, session, skill and item commands in the scripting engine so the scripts can change the game.
A new map is coming soon for the new engine and hopefully will have some improvements over our last tile system including:
- More mine tiles, including different types of rocks
- The same type of trees grouped in forests or clumps
- More trees and some plants
- Being able to go inside houses and customise the interiors of houses
- Digging caves through mountains
Please check the previous news post about a bug in Firefox and test the new version of the game and report any bugs you find!

| Scripting Engine work | | posted by Graham on the 15th 2007f March 2007 | I've been doing some more work on the scripting engine and have created many more commands that can be used inside it that allow item creation, updating the map, and editing character positions on the map. Soon I will have made enough functions to create some real items.
A map is currently being designed for the new game (very carefully) and it should ensure that towns have to trade and work together to encourage teamwork by placing resources in groups (ie Town A might have only birch wood but gold ore and Town B might have only redwood wood and bronze ore so both towns have to trade to live!).
Please post any suggestions for the new version of the game in the wiki, community forum or email them to us!
Hopefully I will be able to do some more updates this week and weekend however I am getting much busier for then next few weeks (again!) but after that expect heaps of updates and (maybe) a playable version of the new game!

Graham No I wasn't playing RuneScape. There will be a second map for tunnels that starts off as rock and when you dig down on the normal map it creates a passage to the second map which can then be dug out.
We are planning on doing climate zones when we do weather, but basing tree growth on zones is a good idea too.
Combat system is planned, but it is not a very high priority.
Animals will be herdable and meat and milk will be able to be harvested.
The cooking system will be very open ended with many possibilities - so you can decide what ingredients to put in and you may or may not get a good dish out.
Your other ideas are all good suggestions too.
Graham
poopsydoopsy Oh and were you playing RS yesterday? I quit but came back for an hour to see what was new and a Graham (followed by two initials dont remember what they were) was selling steel bars... Must be a coincidence.
poopsydoopsy Yay!
o How will the aforementioned tunels work? Will there be a separate map that starts blank but can be dug out like a tunnle system? Then the tunnles would not be allwed to be too close together or it colapses, and mining could only be done underground (save by panning)
o Also there should be climate zones basted on latitude so that the birches couldn't be moved to the redwood zone. o and terraforming should be near impossible o not to mention natural boundries such as mountains, rivers, and oceans should be enforced to limit trade o overfarming could make land barren o land by rivers should tolorate overfarming better at the cost of random floods o Not to mention a combat system o Plus animals that are herdable and from which meat and milk can be harvested o Your cooking system should also include the ability for the players to customize dishes, not just the admins
Just a few sudgemegestions... Just wish that I could help :(
Either way I would be surprised if you get even what you have planned done within several weeks.

| Village scores | | posted by Graham on the 17th 2007f March 2007 | Did some work on version 2 today - there is now a village hiscore table and each village has it's own page (like user pages!).

poopsydoopsy Or, limit the ammount of land... Land should be much more expensive, eventualy the price could be calculated based on the value of the land (climate, and natural resources) and unclaimed land would have to be useless for full scale resource harvesting (shaft mining etc; although camping and chopping wood should be allowed but slower and less xp). Yes, plots would be adjascent but should be limited by number of people, skill levels, and price would increase by number of plots owned. Resources increase inverse exponentialy, so it takes a gold mountain longer to get from 15% - 20% than 80% - 85%. =P
Sappho Another thought on villages: to keep one village from simply hopping around the map, claiming valuable resources all over the place, would it be possible to make it so that each tile claimed for a village must be adjacent to a previously claimed tile? Otherwise I can see one village running around the map, claiming every tile of gold, every type of trees, etc.
Sappho To avoid all players being forced into joining the same village at the start, perhaps there should be birch trees available on public land from the start? Either this, or maybe have a few default starting villages that are all set to trade with each other right from the beginning, and the players that start in each of them begin with only mining tools, or woodcutting tools, or farming tools - whatever is appropriate to the area. The starting villages could have minimal resources and eventually players would want to move somewhere else.
Looking forward to further progress! I know this is taking a long time and a lot of effort, but I'm sure it will be worth the wait.

| Calling classes inside the scripting engine of version 3 | | posted by Graham on the 30th 2007f March 2007 | In version 3, I have extended the script engine to allow calling of classes written in PHP which means the engine is very nearly ready for item use (the final thing to do is timers).
However, I will need to write lots of classes for the engine to start to be usable, which I will be doing over the next few weeks.

poopsydoopsy Fine. I added it from his chat thing it's in the wiki =P
Sappho Wow, impatient much? I'm sure Graham is busy with "real life." If you've never heard of that, maybe I should make a wiki page on it. Please, guys, just enjoy the game and stop demanding so much. If you want it that fast, make it yourself. Oh, that's right, none of us know how to do that, and we need to rely on the generously donated spare time and skill of Graham to update this *completely free* game when he can. Sorry if I sound overly aggressive, but it frustrates me to hear people complain all the time about Graham not working hard enough on a project which he doesn't charge us a penny to enjoy the results of.
poopsydoopsy When are the avatars getting added?
poopsydoopsy Wait until hell freezes over, then until it thaws out, then wait until satan hires a monkey to ride an elephant into heaven as a prank against god.

Graham I would keep money, items and skills in v3 but v2 is unbalanced and the database tables are not compatible.
poopsydoopsy Graham said it himself. Money, items, and skills will be reset along with land claims and everything... No point in playing ;)
jessieomerr Yep, I totally agree. Its just I wanted to play so bad. ^_^ im sure he'll unbann us within a week, or so.
Sapppho I'm sure Graham will un-ban us once he gets the chance. We'll just have to be patient and hope that people like this find something better to do with their time than disrupt our game!
jessieomerr I tried not to have to reregister, but I guess when its been 3 days, you have no choice.
jessieomerr aww I can't believe some idiot would want to delete me. Well actually I can. but yeah jessieomer here. got banned by the expletive deleted with mod privileges that Sappho was talking about.
Sapppho We don't seem to be having any trouble keeping you around, now do we? I think administrative decisions should be left up to Graham. I do not see this game as having a bad reputation, although there are a few players whom I wouldn't miss if they were to stop playing.
poopsydoopsy Basicaly, if you want, I'll gladly give you all my in-game money. The only valulable items are holiday stuff. Anyone without holiday things has nothing to lose except V1 avveys and most of those people aren't comming back.
poopsydoopsy That's crazy. What we need is an invite only closed beta. Anyone active within one month plus people who have transferable items on their accounts like dark robes who have logged on within a year should keep accounts, and the rest be wiped when graham pulls v2 support. A closed beta is exactly what we need at least until the game can retain users. It is the only way. Players could still invite others; only things like this would not happen. This game cannot retain players! It is just establishing a bad reputation.
Sapppho It's Sappho. Apparently I've been banned by some expletive deleted with mod privileges. While I don't think it's a good idea to stop trying to attract players, I do think it might be a good idea to remove mod and admin privileges from anyone who isn't still an active, responsible, and mature player.
poopsydoopsy LEADER BOARD IS IN THE WIKI for anyone who hasn't heard.
poopsydoopsy Okay Graham I know that you don't come here much anymore, neither do most of us... I'm not saying drop the project, but is it possible to purge all of the sites linking here so there are no new users until the game is actualy made? Publicity is bad for a game that is not good enough to retain users yet. They remember it and it attracts spammers and hackers.

| V3 Updates! | | posted by Graham on the 22nd 2007f July 2007 | I've got loads of spare time, so I've just started writing some updates this morning. Since I've got all this time, progress on v3 should race ahead over the next few weeks!
REGIONS
Regions are areas of the map. The map has 16 regions which will all have a different climate and conditions. If you are the first one to discover a region (trust me - it's easy!), you will be able to name it. If not, it will tell you the name of the region and who named it.
PROFILES
I've changed the way the profile system works, so the game will not be able to locate your profile. However, when you create a new profile, it will allow you to choose a gender/hair colour/eye colour. These are permament, so be sure you choose what you want!
AVATARS
I've changed the way the avatar script works and added some HTTP headers to force the browser to cache the images. The biggest update is you can see your customizations (hair colour, eye colour etc).

| Updates and 2 week holiday | | posted by Graham on the 27th 2007f July 2007 | I've been doing some various updates over the past days, all for v3:
REGION PAGE A new "Regions" page that allows players to view all the discovered regions. There's a link near the logout link in the main interface.
SKILLS I spent quite a lot of time getting the skill tree to work, there is still more that needs to be done (sub-skills should make their root-skills on creation).
MSCRIPT UPDATES I've been doing some various updates to the mScript language.
CLASSES UPDATED I updated some more of the core classes today, and added some too.
ERROR HANDLING UPDATED The error handler should work better now.
NEW GRAPHICS New graphics showing resources (like ore, trees):

That's all the updates (that I can remember).

| The current status of Stone Age Online | | posted by Graham on the 12th 2007f November 2007 | I am sure many people, and many new players, are waiting for updates. The game hasn't been updated for some time, especially the older version. A lot of the new changes have been behind the scenes, which can't even be seen - and internal changes of the game code are hardly worth a news post.
Recently, my interest in this project has started to diminish. I am working on the server for another game, whic his not web-based, which is taking up a lot of my time right now.
A lot of the graphics artists haven't been active at all for the last year, meaning I've not been very motivated to work on this.
I've also been very busy recently, with exams a few months earlier, and starting lots of new important work now.
Hopefully, some of my time will free up soon, but I am also comitted to a lot of things not on the computer (some of the people who know me better will probably be suprised at this comment!).
Anyway, as I have posted before, I am looking for people to help programming items. The language is a simple, intepreted BASIC like language, but very dumbed down. Also, for non-programmers, I may be making a web-interface too, allowing you to still make items.
I'm also going to be teaching another team member, Caius, about the workings of the database and game code, to help update the game. He has been helping out for some time.
So, hopefully soon you will see more updates, and maybe even news of my other projects.
If there is anyone interested in helping, and starting to revive this project, I will be glad to accept you. The amount of work in creating a game, even a web-based like this, is incredibly difficult, and with the other project I am working on at the moment, this is proving to be a daunting task.
So, hopefully soon you will see some more updates by Caius. Thanks for some of the more active moderators who have helped to keep some form of order while I have been very busy.

| The current status | | posted by Graham on the 22nd 2008f March 2008 | I'm sure some users are eagerly waiting for an update.
At the moment I'm still working on other projects which are progressing well. But my interests have started to drift back to this game.
Whilst working on the other projects I've finally been able to properly organize my code neatly and in an organized fashion.
I'm going to start work on the game again. The first thing I will change is the scripting engine.
mScript was a small BASIC-like language I created. I've come to realise there was no need, because PHP is an interpreted language I can just use short PHP scripts instead for items.
I'm also going to open up development more. Maybe I'll make parts of the game, especially the scripts, open source. I really want others to help because I don't have the time to program this alone.
I will post more updates soon.

| New server | | posted by Graham on the 20th 2008f July 2008 | The new server seems to be much faster - the host does not seem to throttle the connection (as much).
It does not have as much RAM/swap as the old server (256 MB of RAM compared to 1 GB) so I will be monitoring it closely to make sure it can support the traffic - I have MRTG logging internet traffic, disk space, cpu usage and ram/swap usage.
If you do see any problems e-mail me.
I am going to be splitting up the one big database into smaller ones (with a separate one for Stone Age Online), hopefully this will increase performance and it will be easier for me to administrate.
Hopefully in the coming weeks you will see more updates on the new game engine.

| Chat issues fixed | | posted by Graham on the 22nd 2009f March 2009 | | I've fixed a few issues with the way the in-game chat worked. Now you should no longer be redirected to a page that says 'channel x' has been created after 15 seconds. | |

| Magic quotes issue | | posted by Graham on the 25th 2009f April 2009 | For some reason magic_quotes_gpc was set to On, which is why the quotes were being prefixed with a slash everywhere (as my code then escaped them as well!).
I've fixed the issue now.
Also dates in the news now display correctly!

| Downtime | | posted by Graham on the 1st 2009f May 2009 | Sorry we had some downtime earlier today due to problematic administrators, the issue has now been solved. The administrators who have caused this issue have been banned from accessing the game.
The chatbox has also got out of hand recently so I have cleared all messages. I would like to remind all users that swearing/rude language is inappropriate for use in the chatbox, and using it will get you banned.

| Maps | | posted by Graham on the 8th 2009f May 2009 | I have realised that lots of new players may be getting stuck looking for somewhere to settle/build or even to find other players.
Therefore, I am releasing the first official map of (part of) the game world. There is in fact another part of the world, which will remain secret for the moment - explores shall have to discover it!
Full size
Enjoy!

| Downtime/rollback | | posted by Graham on the 9th 2009f May 2009 | Unfortunately some bad configuration caused around an hours downtime. We had to restore to our daily backup, probably only a few hours of game time were lost.

| Scheduled maintenance | | posted by Graham on the 9th 2009f May 2009 | At the moment we are having problems with high memory usage on the server hosting Stone Age Online. We've already worked hard to fix the existing configuration by fine-tuning various settings, however, these have not helped and we will most likely have to do a complete reinstall of the server and all the applications that run on it.
I will post more details when we have a date for the maintenance, which is likely to be at the weekend. The servers will be down for no more than 48 hours (unless there is a significant issue) and we will have backups on standby ready to revert to an old configuration. If all goes well, the process should take place in just a few hours, but we have left these precautions "just in case".

| Fixed a few errors due to server reinstall | | posted by Graham on the 29th 2009f June 2009 | | Due to the complexity of the Stone Age Online (mainly due to poor programming 5 years ago), I\'ve only just fixed a few more errors. Some of the parameters were incorrect for this server. All should be working now! | |
